Type Locality and Naming

Along the river Chatkal, Chatkal ridge. I.M. Nigmadzhanov in 1999.

Synonym: Chatkal Series, Чаткальская сер.


Lithology and Thickness

Includes the Koksuy Fm, Temirbastau Fm, Akbulak-Carb-L Fm, Taldybulak Fm, and Sargardon Fm. Separate wedges of the Kulosyn Fm can be considered part of the series. Normal stratigraphic contacts and clear lateral transitions are observed between all suites. The series includes large organogenic structures such as biogenic and reefoid masses of Tournaisian age. Overall, the series consists of thick-bedded limestones of a large carbonate platform thickness from 500 to 1000m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is lying with a stratigraphic break on black Famennian dolomites (Chavatin Fm)

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by thin-bedded siliceous limestones of the early Visean (Pskem Gr).

Regional extent

The western part and southwestern spurs of the Talas Alatau, Chatkal, Pskem, Ugam, Sandalash, and Koksu mountain ranges.

Contains representatives of brachiopod genera - Palaeochoristites, Kadraliproductus, Rugosochonetes, Composita; foraminifers - Septabrunsiina, Tournayella, Palaeospiroplectammina, Brunsia; conodonts - Siphonodella, Pseudopolygnathus, Polygnathus, Gnathodus, Dollymae.
